And the work begins

So i picked up the frame on saturday morning, and got right to work. I modified the firewall downtubes to flare outwards, instead of straight down. This will facilitate further to the rear engine/trans placement to help with the steering and weight distro, as well as ease of install and removal. I also welded on the floorpans with 16ga steel, a fully radiused bead of weld, and stitched welded the top side. Super solid, no rattles.

Sunday, I made the drive back to florida with the chassis and 4 225/45/15 hoosier R6 tires for the build as well.

This evening i made up the last of the panels i can fab up while the car is here for the back side. The two generic sides, and then the rear of the trans tunnel piece i had to fab up as well to match the contours.

So all of you guys that follow me have seen what the car has progressed through. Basically a POS high school kids love, to a pretty much fully built race car. I have decided to take it one step further.

I am sure most of you have seen the video of the exocet getting ran into by the Expedition. Well, that video finally pushed me over to do something exotic. So i called up the Exomotive big man Kevin and set up an appointment. So on Saturday May 5th, i made the 6 hours drive to Atlanta to check it out. A small, humble shop with enough room to store all the chassis and build an exocet by hand, one at a time, I was instantly excited. The passion of this one guy, to bring over the budget kit car market to the US was astounding. The plans, ideas, and pure enthusiasm made me even more enthralled to do this. So here we are. The 6th of Ma, and I am making plans to build an Exocet in Myrtle Beach, SC and have it done before June! The excitement of turning an already iconic extreme Miata, into a one of a kind, v8 powered 1500lb car is almost nerve twitching. And the fact that everyone will be able to come check it out at their headquarters in Atlanta makes it even cooler! The fact that there could be a cult following of these cool little cars, with V8s is amazing. The power to weight ratio makes it more exciting than even a GTR* (Note: To me). But ill put my happy hat away and stop gushing. I will however share a few pics i snapped while visiting with them!

So, ive been working hard at the miata to get it ready for the track, and it is close, oh so close.

On the list left are:

Swap out heads, oil catch can, oil pan swap to rear dipstick type, oil temp gauge, and water overflow tank. Also i need to swap out my front tires for a smaller size, and find a pair of wheels to drift on. Ive been driving it around town, its a huge attraction everywhere i go. I parked it at work, and 9 people stopped and took pictures of it lol. It’s a hell of a monster to drive, and I love it.

Also, on sunday they are hosting the drift event. First and third sunday of the month brings out the drifters to Emerald Coast Dragway. Gates open at 12, drifting starts at noon!

So, after the weekend of festivities, it is time to get back to work. I had a great time at Emerald Coast Dragway with all the awesomely loud and fast cars, which just motivated me even further. I have a problem where i need a different Fuel pressure regulator, but cant really get one cue to cost, so i figured id go old school. Mechanical fuel pump. So for about 40 bucks total, I can eliminate the electric pump, run the fuel to the pump, pump to holley FPR i have now, then to the carb. Coupled with the oil filter relocation thanks to a friend, i can put the 302 headers swapped sides, and pointing forward to facilitate a forward exit of the exhaust out of the sides of the bumper. I also finished fully installing my roll cage, and fabbed up a pretty spiffy roll bar pad again. Used 1/4″ sewback foam, automotive vinyl, and eyelets along with red ribbon to sinch it down over safety padding. makes it look 100% better, and i love it.

I can also make them for your roll cages! Materials alone arent cheap, and neither is labor lol. but they look so awesome. Check it out

Also, i pulled the front steering rack out, took it apart, cut the seal ring out of it, cut off and closed up the lines, and reinstalled it. Now i have a great feeling non powered rack so i can dump the PS pump, and have a clear path for exhaust. Slight clutch fork rod adjustment and shifting has improved as well.

Tomorrow however, I have to make time to give the Galaxie 500 some love. The 390 intake manifold REAR gasket blew out somewhere down the road after i rebuilt the engine, and seeps oil, that burns at high speeds from the heat of the transmission. Plus it leaves ugly oil spots. Gotta get the DD back to perfection, so tomorrow will be spent taking care of that.

Today was one of the most beautiful, comfortable days. If only yesterday was this nice! A great overcast, light breeze, temps in the high 70s low 80s made it super pleasant to be at the track. Wasn’t terribly packed considering yesterdays events, which lent to tons of passes for everyone. A large number of bikes, a few imports, and a few american muscle cars. Nice variety for everyone. Emerald Coast Dragway ECHO series Oct 8th

I must say….WOW. The cars, the drivers, the crowd was amazing. Some of the most raw displays of power i have seen in a LONG time. Tons of wheels off the ground, tires wrinkling, and super fast times. Not to mention the outstanding smell of race gas in the morning, afternoon and well into the evening. Today’s festivities 100% made me happy to be an American. No electric cars, no hybrids, no eco friendly stuff here. Just good ol push rod powered, nitrous injected, open header, stupid loud, ground shaking American Iron (and aluminum!) Just the sound of these things at wide open throttle as they rocket off the line made my day. Makes me glad that there is still such a huge supporting for raw pollution creating power.

But that isn’t saying we don’t appreciate the hybrid cars. You guys make up for all the pollution we produce for fun, making it an equal exchange…right? RIGHT!

Another beautiful night in the Panhandle at Emerald Coast Dragway. Cool weather, awesome cars and tons of fun. The ECHO series guys were out in force with test runs for the main event on Saturday.
